Seongsan Hotels — The Pre-Dawn Walk, or Driving in the Dark
Three Seongsan hotels compared. One sits 760m from Sunrise Peak and two sit 2.4km away, with nothing between. With a car that is five minutes; without one it decides the trip.

Seongsan is unusual for Jeju. The island runs on rental cars, but Seongsan contains a spot you can walk to Seongsan Ilchulbong from — and catch the Udo ferry on foot too. The other two properties on this list only work if you are driving.
The numbers show that split cleanly.

Hotels
- Co-op City Hotel Seongsan

760m, or 2.4km — with nothing in between
| Hotel | To Sunrise Peak | Location | Overall | Reviews |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Co-op City Hotel Seongsan | 760m | 9.1 | 8.5 | 11,692 |
| The Best Jeju Seongsan | 2,400m | 8.7 | 8.3 | 10,147 |
| Sungsan Marina Hotel | 2,430m | 8.9 | 8.4 | 5,112 |
Nothing sits between 1km and 2.4km. There is little buildable land immediately below the peak, so everything else has pulled back towards Ojo-ri and Goseong-ri.
Which means the first thing to settle in Seongsan is not the hotel. It is whether you are renting a car.
Without a car, the list is one
Co-op City Hotel Seongsan is the only one here within walking distance of the peak, and the pier where the Udo ferry departs is walkable too. Reviews repeatedly describe walking straight out and up Sunrise Peak, walking to the ferry pier, and finding the buses easy.
Its 11,692 reviews are the largest sample in Seongsan and its 9.1 location score the highest. For “eastern Jeju without a car” it has effectively become the default.
That said, Jeju International Airport is 39–41km straight-line from all three, listed at 60–65 minutes by car. Whichever you choose, budget for the airport legs at both ends.
With a car, ignore the distances
2,400m and 2,430m are the same drive. Between the two driving options distance decides nothing; what is inside the building does.
- For several nights with room to spread out, The Best Jeju Seongsan. It has ondol rooms — the traditional Korean heated-floor rooms — and pet-friendly room types in the same building, and a ground-floor convenience store and coin laundry make it work for a longer stay. Its ninth-floor outdoor pool opens only in summer, with a separate entry fee — 26 June to 31 August in 2026
- For Sunrise Peak framed in your window, Sungsan Marina Hotel. A 2014 building refurbished in 2024, the newest in Seongsan, with the peak visible from types carrying a Mountain or Ocean label
Two places where the room name matters
At Sungsan Marina Hotel a single room type flips the verdict. One review stayed in both the Superior and the Deluxe and wrote that the Superior has heavy road noise and a small room, while the Deluxe — with Sunrise Peak visible to one side — was the best room of their trip. On a results page these are just two prices for one hotel.
Co-op City Hotel Seongsan has its own catch: even an ocean view on a low floor faces a road, so opening the window brings traffic noise.
Child policies differ at every property
This is what changes the total most in Seongsan.
| Hotel | Free ages | Counted as adult |
|---|---|---|
| Co-op City Hotel Seongsan | 2–3 | From age 4 |
| Sungsan Marina Hotel | 0–1 | — |
| The Best Jeju Seongsan | None | From age 4 |
One four-year-old reverses the order. The property where families with young children are the largest guest type — The Best Jeju Seongsan — is the one with no free-child policy at all, while Co-op City offers one but starts adult pricing at four.
For a wider range you have to leave Seongsan. Haevichi Hotel & Resort Jeju in Pyoseon lists ages 2–12 free across 503 rooms with pools, a sauna and a kids’ club — but it sits more than 20km from Sunrise Peak, in a different area.
Seongsan is not a summer destination
Two properties here list December as their busiest month — Co-op City Hotel Seongsan and Haevichi over in Pyoseon. People come to Seongsan for the sunrise, not for swimming — and the one pool on this list, at The Best Jeju Seongsan, is open in summer only.
If you are coming in winter, plan around two things. First, hot water: Sungsan Marina Hotel draws repeated reports of it running out after about 30 minutes, alongside notes that it did not matter in summer. With a group, stagger the showers.
Second, the pre-dawn journey. Seeing sunrise means leaving in the dark, and from the 2.4km properties that means driving at that hour. This is where walking distance earns its price. Co-op City also has reviews describing the sun rising beside the peak seen from the rooftop — so not climbing at all is an option.
When Seongsan is the wrong choice
- For a full resort, Haevichi Hotel & Resort Jeju in Pyoseon or the Jungmun resorts
- To cut airport transfers, stay in Jeju City — 2.2–3.4km from the airport, a tenth of the distance. See the Jeju neighbourhood guide
- To walk to a beach, Hamdeok puts you 30–320m from the sand
How this list is put together
- Verified distances to Seongsan Ilchulbong, Seopjikoji and Jeju International Airport
- Whether you can walk — few areas in Jeju actually differ on this
- Child age rules that change the total, and what you can use inside the building
- Construction and renovation years, plus complaints that recur rather than appear once
Distances come from Agoda property data, with the verification date on each hotel page. This is researched from booking sources rather than written from a stay, and it does not quote rates.
