Inside District 1 — Walkable Core or Larger Rooms on the West Side

Facts checked: 2026-08-10

In District 1, where you stay decides your days. Seven hotels: a core close to City Hall, or a west side with larger rooms nearer the Reunification Palace.

The first question in Ho Chi Minh City is whether you are in District 1. The second — and the one that actually decides your days — is where inside it. Within the same district, City Hall sits 160m from one hotel and 2.4km from another.

What matters is that the middle is empty. Line these seven up by distance to City Hall and you get 160m · 220m · 490m · 540m, then straight to 1.3km · 1.6km · 2.4km. Nothing lands between. If you intend to walk, choosing a band is very nearly the whole decision.

Hotels

  • A&Em Art Hotel

340m to Ben Thanh Market. At 55 rooms the building is not laid out simply — rooms 1, 2, 3 and 5 use one lift, while 7 and 8 need a staircase first.

The core — 160 to 540m from City Hall

Four properties on the Nguyen Hue and Dong Khoi axis.

  • Rex Hotel Saigon — 160m to City Hall, 520m to Ben Thanh Market. On Nguyen Hue Boulevard, in a 1927 building. No free-stay bracket for children.
  • Liberty Central Citypoint — 220m to City Hall and 380m to Ben Thanh Market, the closest to the market on this list. Four stars.
  • The Myst Dong Khoi — 160m to Nguyen Hue, 490m to City Hall. All 108 rooms have balconies and run 40–70sqm.
  • The Reverie Saigon — 150m to Nguyen Hue, 540m to City Hall, and a 9.7 location score, the highest in the city.

Inside this band, the walking difference between any two of them is about five minutes. Position stops being the deciding factor here; from this point the split is price tier, room size and child policy.

The west side — 1.3 to 2.4km from City Hall

Three properties running from behind Ben Thanh Market towards District 5.

  • Fusion Suites Saigon — 1.3km to City Hall, 890m to Ben Thanh. Children stay free to 11, and there is a 42sqm two-bedroom unit.
  • Duc Vuong Saigon Hotel - Bui Vien — 1.6km to City Hall, 1.1km to Ben Thanh, inside the Bui Vien strip.
  • Hotel Nikko Saigon — 2.4km to City Hall, 1.9km to Ben Thanh. The furthest west here, with apartment-style rooms that have kitchens.

From this band, Nguyen Hue and Dong Khoi become a car ride every time. What you get back is floor area at the same rate, and configurations — kitchens, family units — that the core rarely offers.

Judge by the palace and the order flips

Pick one number and you will read the district wrong. Distance to the Reunification Palace mixes the two bands together.

Citypoint leads at 670m and Rex follows at 730m, but the next entry is Fusion Suites at 800m — closer than core properties The Myst and The Reverie, both at 1.1km. If your days are built around the palace and the War Remnants Museum, the case for insisting on the core weakens considerably.

Ben Thanh Market does not cleanly separate the bands either: 380–790m in the core against 890m–1.9km to the west, which puts Fusion Suites (890m) barely 200m behind The Reverie (700m). Only the Nguyen Hue and City Hall axis splits the two groups sharply.

Airport times do not follow the map

This is the calculation that trips people up here. All ten sit 6.1–7.1km straight-line from Tan Son Nhat — under a kilometre apart — yet the drive runs from 24 minutes to 31.

Those times cut straight across the two bands. The quickest 24 minutes covers Fusion Suites (6.1km) out west and Citypoint (6.7km) in the core; the slowest 31 covers Duc Vuong (6.8km) out west alongside The Myst and The Reverie, both at 7.1km, in the core. Nikko, furthest west at 6.5km, lands in between at 28. Airport time will not decide this choice for you — budget about 30 minutes from anywhere on this list.

Rail is more consistent. Saigon railway station is 1.8–2.4km from the western properties and 2.8–3.2km from the core, with Fusion Suites at about 9 minutes by car — the shortest of the times we could confirm.

How we choose the stays on this list

  • Verified distances to City Hall, Nguyen Hue, the Reunification Palace and Ben Thanh Market
  • Drive time to the airport, which matters more here than kilometres
  • Room configurations by party size, and child age policies
  • Drawbacks that come up repeatedly in guest reviews

Distances come from Agoda property data, and the verification date is on each hotel page. These are researched notes gathered before booking, not accounts of staying there.
