Ba Dinh — Where You Buy Airport Minutes and Pay in Taxi Rides

Facts checked: 2026-08-10

For a late arrival or an early flight in Hanoi: Ba Dinh is the quicker side for Noi Bai, while Hoan Kiem Lake is 2.7–4.2km away. Four hotels compared.

Ba Dinh is the part of Hanoi where you buy time on the airport run. The four properties below sit 29–35 minutes from Noi Bai by car, against 36–44 minutes from the Hoan Kiem side. The bill arrives daily: Hoan Kiem Lake is 2.7–4.2km away, so the Old Quarter means a car every time.

Whether that trade works is decided by your itinerary, not by the hotels. If you plan to walk the Old Quarter each evening, most of Ba Dinh’s advantage disappears. If you are using Hanoi as a base for Ha Long Bay or Ninh Binh, or flying at an awkward hour, it reads the other way.

What 29–35 minutes actually buys

Airport times run Lotte Hotel Hanoi 29 minutes, Hanoi Daewoo Hotel 30, Pan Pacific Hanoi 31 and Fortuna Hotel Hanoi 35.

The distances barely differ — 19.2 to 21.9km — yet the times spread by six minutes, which is the city-entry traffic showing up in the number. Set against the 42–44 minutes at the larger Hoan Kiem hotels, some pairings differ by more than 20 minutes return.

The shorter the trip, the more that matters. On two nights, twenty minutes each way is not half a day of sightseeing — it is roughly one relaxed dinner. Whether that is worth lengthening every other journey is the actual question.

What you give up: 2.7–4.2km to Hoan Kiem

Staying in Ba Dinh means giving up the walk-everywhere base. Hoan Kiem Lake is 2.7km from Pan Pacific, 3.5km from Fortuna, 4.1km from Daewoo and 4.2km from Lotte. The night market runs 1.8–3.9km.

Only Pan Pacific is arguably walkable, and reviews put that walk at about 40 minutes — the kind of distance you do once and then stop doing. Grab is easy and cheap in Hanoi, so this is not about difficulty. It is about the same twenty minutes happening two or three times a day.

Two things people get wrong about Ba Dinh

Both of the usual reasons for choosing Ba Dinh deserve checking against the numbers.

  • West Lake really is closer. Pan Pacific is 1.5km away, Lotte 2.8km and Daewoo 2.9km, against 3.1–3.8km from the Hoan Kiem properties. Fortuna is the exception at 3.5km.
  • The Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum is not. Ba Dinh runs 1.6–2.4km while Hoan Kiem runs 1.3–1.9km, so the Old Quarter hotels are often nearer.

In short: West Lake and the airport justify Ba Dinh; the Mausoleum does not.

How the four differ

  • For shopping and a supermarket under the roof — Lotte Hotel Hanoi has a department store in the same 65-floor building, which suits the day before a flight home.
  • For the shortest airport run — Hanoi Daewoo Hotel at 30 minutes, with a pool and sauna that reviews single out. That combination is built for a late departure: check out, come back, clean up, go.
  • For lakeside walking — Pan Pacific Hanoi is 510m from Tran Quoc Pagoda and 1.5km from West Lake, and at 2.7km it is the closest here to Hoan Kiem.
  • For meetings and events — Fortuna Hotel Hanoi offers 345 rooms over 17 floors with banquet space, a 28 sqm family room and a 60 sqm suite. Its 7.9 overall and 7.8 location scores are the lowest here, so it is a poor fit for a sightseeing trip.

One caveat about the area itself: Pan Pacific sits at the northern, waterside end while the other three line up along the southern business spine. That is why the distance to Hoan Kiem varies by more than 1.5 times inside a single district.
