Hotels Near the Colosseum — Ancient Rome at the Door, the Vatican as an Outing

Facts checked: 2026-09-24

Five hotels run from 220m to 1.3km from the Colosseum. The district covers both the amphitheatre and the Monti streets behind Via Nazionale, so two of the five are actually closer to Termini than to the Colosseum — check which half you are booking.

This district covers two things that a map treats as one: the Colosseum itself, and Monti — the neighbourhood behind Via Nazionale that has its own bars and restaurants rather than a strip of tourist menus.

It is one of the few places in central Rome where a headline ruin sits inside walking distance of somewhere people actually live. The cost is at the other end of the city: all five properties here are 2.8km or more from St Peter’s.

Two of the five are closer to Termini than to the Colosseum. Hotel Artemide and Quirinale Hotel sit on Via Nazionale, which is the Monti half — excellent if you want the station and the Forum both reachable, misleading if you booked expecting the amphitheatre outside the window.

If the Colosseum is what you want to see when you step out, Hotel Palazzo Manfredi at 220m is in a different category from everything else here — it is the closest of all 28 Rome properties on this site.

The one that reaches both Romes

Hotel Hiberia is the outlier worth naming: 900m to the Colosseum and 840m to the Pantheon. Via XXIV Maggio climbs the Quirinale between Piazza Venezia and the presidential palace, which puts Ancient Rome one way and the old city the other, both under a kilometre.

It also lists six room configurations — connecting rooms, family rooms, triples, twins, doubles and suites — the widest range of any property in this comparison. In a city short of anything above a double, that is the practical reason families end up there.

The one where the reviews disagree with themselves

Quirinale Hotel carries a genuinely mixed sample — five of twelve guests call the building dated, seven praise the cleanliness, and one points out that the complaints look older than a refit. With 7,385 reviews behind an 8.4, an average this size will lag a renovation by a long time. Ask which rooms have been redone.

Viminale Hotel ties Hotel Artemide for the highest score in this district — 9.2 across 2,361 reviews — and checks in from 13:00, the earliest of the five. Staff and cleanliness are what recur most in the reviews we read; a few guests also mention street or drainage noise, so ask for a room off Cesare Balbo if you sleep lightly.

What each is arranged for

  • The view — Hotel Palazzo Manfredi, 16 rooms at 220m. Confirm whether your rate covers the main building or the lofts 400m away
  • Recovery — Hotel Artemide has a sauna, spa and gym, which matters after days measured in kilometres of cobblestone
  • Your party fitting in one room — Hotel Hiberia, six configurations
  • Scale — Quirinale Hotel, 209 rooms, so a real lobby and availability when the small hotels are full

Before you choose this district

The Vatican is the thing you give up. 2.8km to 3.7km to St Peter’s means a metro ride every time, and if the museums are the reason for the trip, Vatican and Prati hotels puts them inside 1.5km.

If you want the airport train instead, hotels near Roma Termini are 640m or less from the platforms. All six areas are compared in where to stay in Rome.

City tax is collected at check-out and scales with the star rating, outside the rate you booked (the Italy page has the bands).
